Affordable SSD Solution for PC OEMs
Kioxia Corporation has announced the release of its KIOXIA EG7 Series solid state drives (SSDs), pioneering the use of the company’s BiCS FLASH™ generation 8 QLC technology. Aiming to provide a cost-effective solution for PC original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), these SSDs are the first client solution using this advanced QLC technology. They offer performance equivalent to TLC-based solutions.
Offering impressive performance, the EG7 Series SSDs are suitable for slim laptops and both commercial and consumer desktops. By adopting the BiCS FLASH™ generation 8 technology, manufacturers can enhance the total cost of ownership with these value-oriented components.
Delivering random read and write speeds of up to 1,000 KIOPS, the new SSDs also boast sequential read speeds reaching 7,000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 6,200 MB/s. NVMe™ 2.0d support is integrated into the Kioxia EG7 Series SSDs, providing more flexibility in system design and device management, making them an attractive choice for PC OEMs.
Innovative Design Features
Available in various form factors, including M.2 Type 2230, Type 2242, and Type 2280, KIOXIA EG7 Series ensures compatibility with a wide range of systems. It incorporates mature Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology, which utilises a portion of system memory to improve power consumption while maintaining responsive performance.
Key features of the EG7 Series include compliance with the PCIe® 4.0 specification and support for Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) based on TCG Opal version 2.02. Capacities range from 512 GB to 2048 GB, catering to different storage needs.
Sampling for the EG7 Series has begun with select PC OEM customers. Shipments of PCs equipped with these SSDs are expected to start from the second quarter of 2026. This timeline allows OEMs to integrate the drives into their upcoming product lines effectively.
Defining a gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes and a terabyte as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, Kioxia notes that computer operating systems report storage capacity using powers of 2, resulting in less storage capacity being shown. This can vary with file size, formatting, and software configurations.
Within Kioxia’s value-oriented client SSD portfolio, the EG7 Series ensures it meets the needs of both commercial and consumer markets, focusing on affordability and efficiency without compromising on performance.
