Event Supports Dementia Awareness and Brain Health
The 2026 Newcastle Memory Walk & Jog is set to take place on 31st May at Griffith Park, aiming to bring the community together in support of brain health and dementia awareness. This event is part of a series that takes place across Australia, engaging thousands of participants annually.
Organised by Dementia Australia, the event offers participants the option to walk, jog, or run distances of 2.5km, 5km, or 9.5km. Funds raised will support vital services for individuals living with dementia, as well as their families and carers. Dementia Australia provides trusted information, education, and services to over 446,500 Australians living with dementia.
Local resident Renee Murray is participating to honour her stepdad Brian, who lived with dementia for several years. She shared, "I'm taking part to honour Brian and keep his memory alive in a positive, meaningful way." Brian was a dedicated NSW firefighter who served the community for many years.
Community Joins for a Cause
Dementia Australia highlights the importance of physical activity and social connection in supporting brain health. Although factors like age and genetics cannot be changed, staying active can help reduce the risk of developing dementia. The organisation advocates for positive change and supports vital research.
Those unable to attend the Newcastle event have the option to organise their own Memory Walk & Jog through a MyWay event, choosing their own date and location. Participants can register at the official Memory Walk website to get involved.
For more information or to sign up for the event, participants and volunteers can visit the Memory Walk & Jog Newcastle page online. The event is an opportunity to be active for brain health and contribute to a future where people living with dementia receive the care they deserve.
Dementia Australia is here to support people impacted by dementia, enabling them to live as well as possible. The National Dementia Helpline is available at 1800 100 500 for support and inquiries.
