MEU: Workers Shouldn’t Pay for Energy Transition

Union Calls for Detailed Transition Plan

The Mining and Energy Union (MEU) expressed approval on 21st May for Premier Coal’s decision to prevent workers from shouldering the financial costs of the energy transition.

Greg Busson, MEU Western Australia Secretary, highlighted the importance of this move because it addresses longstanding concerns of the workers and communities affected by industry changes. He emphasised that workers should not compromise their financial security for a transition that benefits the overall economy.

“Workers should not be expected to sacrifice their own financial security to deliver an energy transition that benefits the broader economy,” stated Busson, noting that the move acknowledges the workers’ plight.

Union Insists on Comprehensive Transition Strategy with Federal Support Needed

While appreciating the gesture, Busson pointed out the need for detailed long-term transition plans, including replacement industries and job security across regions like Collie. People are anxious about the future and require certainty and real solutions.

“The WA Government cannot do this alone. There needs to be support from the Federal Government as well,” remarked Busson. Serious planning around replacement employment, training pathways, and local industry investment is necessary.

Busson further warned that without federal support, the exemplary transition model seen in Collie might falter. Transition should provide real jobs and future security for regional communities.

“Collie is seen as the gold standard for transition in Australia, but if federal support is not forthcoming then we will quickly turn from the golden child into a bronze Buddha,” he stated.

“Transition can’t just mean closure dates. It has to mean real jobs, real investment, and real futures for regional communities,” emphasised Busson.

The union plans to continue urging governments and industries to collaborate with workers and local communities to develop practical solutions. “Workers have powered this country for generations. They deserve respect, honesty, and a genuine plan for the future,” Busson concluded.
