Continued Support for Remote Ear Care
Mineral Resources (MinRes) has announced a $600,000 commitment to extend its partnership with Ear Science Institute Australia for three more years. This initiative supports vital ear health services in the Pilbara region.
The Healthy Hearing Outback programme plays a crucial role in delivering on-Country ear and hearing assessments to the Nyiyaparli and Martu communities. As a result of these efforts, there has been a significant 62% increase in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeries, alongside a 15% rise in surgery attendance rates by June 2025.
Expanding Access Through Telehealth
The collaborative Telehealth ENT pathway, developed in partnership with Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service and Perth Children’s Hospital, has significantly expanded access to specialist care. Since its launch in 2024, the service has provided over 100 consultations and facilitated 24 surgical referrals. This development ensures that specialist ear care is available without requiring patients to leave their land, family, or culture, which is particularly important for remote communities near MinRes’ mining operations.
Lucy Mitchell, the dedicated Ear Health Coordinator, emphasised the importance of her role: “I work closely with patients, their families, the Aboriginal Medical Service, and other healthcare providers to ensure patients receive the care they need.” The Coordinator role, funded through the partnership, is vital in guiding and supporting patients through every stage of their ear health journey within the health system.
Sandra Bellekom, CEO of Ear Science, highlighted the impact of the renewed partnership: “Streamlining access to excellent hearing care for children and families on country is something we at Ear Science are proud to achieve with MinRes.” The program’s reach extends to several communities across the East Pilbara, including Newman, Jigalong, Punmu, Kunawarritji, and Parnngurr. These efforts are crucial in addressing ear health challenges in one of Western Australia’s most remote regions.
MinRes’ commitment to this partnership underscores its dedication to supporting the health and well-being of indigenous communities in the Pilbara. The partnership not only provides immediate health benefits but also fosters long-term relationships and trust within the communities.
According to the program’s results, there has been a remarkable improvement in the delivery of ear health services. This partnership is a beacon of hope for remote areas, ensuring that essential healthcare services reach those in need without disrupting their cultural ties.
