Exciting Additions and Increased Prizes for 2026

The legendary Mount Isa Mines Rodeo is set to return in 100 days, taking place from 7th to 9th August 2026 at the Buchanan Park Events Complex, Mount Isa, Queensland. This event continues to be the richest rodeo in the country and the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.

In a major announcement, the Rodeo Board confirmed a $5,000 increase in prize money for open events. This increase further cements the rodeo’s status as a premier competition, drawing top cowboys and cowgirls from across the globe.

Mark ‘Tommo’ Thompson, Chair of the Rodeo Community Board, emphasised that maintaining affordable ticket prices ensures accessibility for families. Daily entry passes for adults will remain at $50, with a three-day pass available for $120 and a Family Pass for three children also on offer.

Leanne Caban, Australia’s celebrated barrel racing queen, is set to return with her exceptional horse, Akka Dakka. Originating from Emerald via Julia Creek, Caban has a personal history with the rodeo, having broken the Australian Record in the Barrel Race in 1993 at the old Kalkadoon Park Arena.

Caban expressed her excitement about returning, noting the event’s rich history and personal significance. “My personal history at Isa includes records, family, and so many fun times. I grew up in Julia Creek, so Mt Isa Rodeo time always feels like going home,” she said.

Akka Dakka, her trusted horse, is in top form, having recently competed at Tooloombilla and securing a second-place finish at the Warwick Rodeo in October last year.

As the event nears, accommodation in Mount Isa is reaching full capacity, though camping options remain available. Visitors are encouraged to book early and consider the scenic routes via Matilda Way, Capricorn Way, or Overlanders Way.

The Barnyard Band from Townsville will headline the musical entertainment, featuring performances from Laurence Sorbello and Katisha Adelaide. Meanwhile, NRL icon Sam Thaiday will continue his role as the Indigenous Rodeo Championships Ambassador, proudly wearing his Mount Isa Mines Rodeo buckle.

Rodeo enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the festivities, with more announcements expected in the coming months as the countdown to the event continues. The event is also famous for its vibrant community atmosphere and the chance to witness world-class rodeo performances.
