Honouring Family Diversity Through Literature

In a heartfelt celebration of National Families Week, authors Susanne Gervay and Carolyn Daly have launched ‘Guess How I Was Born’. This picture book highlights the beauty and diversity of family structures across Australia. National Families Week runs from May 11th to 17th and coincides with the United Nations International Day of Families on May 15th.

The week aims to raise awareness about the various forms families can take, reflecting inclusivity and diversity. Gervay and Daly’s book showcases stories of families that are blended, multi-generational, and formed through assisted fertility and IVF. Susanne Gervay, who was awarded the Order of Australia for her contributions to children’s literature, was inspired by her granddaughter’s birth through IVF. She remarked, ‘This book is a celebration of the joy and uniqueness of all families.’

Illustrator Carolyn Daly, renowned for her vivid storytelling, has brought these narratives to life with her engaging illustrations. Daly commented, ‘Creating stories that resonate with children, whether fun or serious, is something I cherish.’

Celebrating Family Diversity

Throughout National Families Week, various events are being held across schools, preschools, and communities to celebrate the diverse nature of families. These gatherings aim to foster understanding and acceptance among children and adults alike.

The book ‘Guess How I Was Born’ is published by Larrikin House and offers an opportunity for families to engage in shared reading experiences. It has already been featured in Woman’s Day, highlighting its appeal and relevance.

The Australian Government Department of Social Services supports the week, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging diverse family types in contemporary society. Families are central to our identity, and this week’s events remind us of the importance of inclusion and equality.

Both Gervay and Daly have personal experiences with diverse families. Gervay’s family includes children born through assisted fertility, while Daly focuses on creating visual stories reflecting real-world experiences of children. Their collaboration highlights storytelling’s power in promoting social justice and self-belief.

Every May, thousands participate in National Families Week activities. The event celebrates family inclusion, diversity, and equality, mirroring the varied composition of families today. Whether through two dads, stepchildren, or mixed ethnicities, families are diverse, and this week recognises that.

Author Susanne Gervay writes for young people, aiming to share stories that inspire laughter, learning, love, and courage. As the child of refugees, she understands resilience and the power of stories to drive self-belief. Recognised for her work with a Lifetime Social Justice Literature Award, her books celebrate families and young people.
