Community Support for Dementia Awareness Grows
Last weekend, more than 890 participants gathered for the 2026 Newcastle Memory Walk & Jog, raising $123,788 to benefit Dementia Australia.
The event is part of a series of 14 Memory Walk & Jog events held across Australia in 2026. These events support individuals affected by dementia and promote physical activity to boost brain health. Participants walked, jogged, and ran, showing their commitment to the cause.
Professor Tanya Buchanan, CEO of Dementia Australia, expressed her gratitude, stating, “There was an incredible turnout from the Newcastle community this year yet again, in support of the many people impacted by dementia across the country.”
She also highlighted the importance of physical activity in reducing the risk of dementia, emphasising that “moving for brain health” is crucial.
Volunteers Drive Event Success
Volunteers played a key role in the success of the Newcastle Memory Walk & Jog. Professor Buchanan acknowledged their significant contributions, emphasising that their dedication ensured a safe and memorable day for everyone involved.
The Newcastle event offered a platform for communities to unite, raise awareness about dementia, and share personal stories. It also allowed participants to engage in physical activity suitable for any fitness level.
Dementia Australia is a trusted source of information, education, and services for over 446,500 Australians living with dementia, and the more than 1.7 million people involved in their care. The organisation advocates for positive change and supports vital research.
