Investigation Addresses Concerns Over Fairness

Following concerns from Human Rights and Age Discrimination Commissioners, the Commonwealth Ombudsman will investigate the automated tools used in aged care assessments in Australia. Last week, the focus was placed on the Integrated Assessment Tool (IAT) under the Support at Home program.

The IAT system evaluates an individual’s needs and eligibility for home-based aged care services subsidised by the government. Decisions made by this system significantly influence service access and financial responsibilities shared between individuals and the government.

Issues with the IAT have been highlighted in recent reports. These include human reviewers’ inability to override automated decisions and challenges in accessing review pathways when errors occur or personal conditions change.
