Record Attendance at International Services

Australians around the globe came together on 25 April to honour Anzac Day. This day is dedicated to remembering those who served in the military during wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions. Thousands attended international services, particularly in Gallipoli, France, and Papua New Guinea.

In Gallipoli, Türkiye, the Dawn Service was attended by 1,791 people, while the Lone Pine Service drew 1,120 participants. Meanwhile, France’s Australian National Memorial hosted 2,525 attendees for its Dawn Service, emphasizing the significance of these events.

Thailand’s Hellfire Pass witnessed 1,041 individuals at its Dawn Service. In Sandakan, Malaysia, 330 attendees gathered to pay their respects. These numbers reflect the commitment of Australians to remembering those who served.

Papua New Guinea Services

Papua New Guinea saw the largest overseas gathering at the Bomana War Cemetery in Port Moresby, with 4,879 attendees. The Isurava Memorial Service attracted 200 people, and the Lae War Cemetery drew 779 participants. The Bitapaka War Cemetery in East New Britain Province had 150 attendees.

Anzac Day commemorations have been a tradition since 1916. This year marks 111 years since the Gallipoli landing, highlighting the dedication to honouring members of the Australian Defence Force, both past and present.

According to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Anzac Day can be an emotional period for veterans and their families. They recommend support services like Open Arms, which offers 24/7 free and confidential counseling for veterans and their families. Call 1800 011 046 or visit the Open Arms website for assistance.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs Anzac Portal provides extensive resources for those seeking more information about the history and meaning of Anzac Day. These commemorations serve as a powerful reminder of the costs of war and the value of peace.
