Oxfam Calls for Global Action Amid Regional Conflict

SYDNEY — Oxfam has mobilised resources to address the immediate needs of those forcibly displaced by Israel’s recent military actions in Lebanon. According to the organisation, this response comes as tensions in the region escalate significantly. Thousands of displaced individuals in areas such as Mount Lebanon, the South, and the Bekaa are receiving support through essential supplies like bedding, hygiene kits, and clean water.

The urgency of the situation is underscored by Bachir Ayoub, Oxfam’s country director in Lebanon, who expressed concern over the impact on a population still recovering from past conflicts. “The expansion of Israeli occupation and its bombing of Lebanon will devastate people across Lebanon who had not yet recovered from the last wave of violence,” Ayoub stated. “Families have been forced from their homes once again as Israel rains bombs down on their communities.”

Escalating Regional Tensions

This humanitarian response is set against a backdrop of regional instability affecting millions. Oxfam has highlighted that the conflict threatens to exacerbate already dire conditions for nearly 60 million people reliant on aid across the Middle East. The organisation has criticised global inaction, attributing the escalation to a failure to hold Israel accountable under international law. Ayoub urged the international community to take decisive action, stating, “Global inaction has set the scene for this dangerous escalation.”

Oxfam is prepared to expand its aid efforts if the conflict spreads further in the region. The organisation also called for all parties involved, including the United States and Iran, to cease hostilities and adhere to international law to prevent further cycles of violence.
