700+ Capacity Venue Welcomes New Era
After extensive multi-million dollar renovations, the historic Regent Theatre in Greater Western Sydney has officially reopened its doors. Australian musician Ian Moss headlined the sold-out performance on 2nd May, marking the occasion.
Established in 1935, this heritage-listed art deco theatre has been restored to its former glory. The venue now accommodates over 700 people with flexible seating configurations and modern technical equipment.
Ian Moss expressed his excitement, stating, "It’s just fantastic to be invited to do this, in a world of shrinking festivals and live venues."
Features and Future Events
Modern amenities now include licensed bars, new stage sound and lighting systems, and artist-friendly dressing rooms. Performances by Sara Berki and Ian Moss highlighted the reopening weekend. Future shows will feature artists like Kate Ceberano and Anh Do.
Duncan MacKay, one of the owners, shared, "Greater Western Sydney is one of the fastest growing urban populations in the country. We’re thrilled to welcome artists and fans."
Originally opened in 1935, the Regent Theatre has played a significant role in the local entertainment scene, becoming especially popular during World War II due to its proximity to the Richmond Air Base. Television legend Mike Walsh purchased and restored it in 1976.
According to Mike Walsh, "I bought The Richmond Regent in 1976. It was hugely successful during World War II, but by then it was ambling along. I called the family and offered to buy it, spending a great deal restoring it."
The renovation project has breathed new life into the theatre. The Regent Theatre is poised to host a range of events, from concerts to comedy nights, providing a diverse array of entertainment options. Upcoming events also include the Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase Tour and performances by Tim Freedman.
