Fuel Security Plan Gains Industry Approval

SYDNEY — Road Freight NSW (RFNSW) has supported the Federal Government’s decision to halve the fuel excise and eliminate the road user charge, a move announced today following an emergency National Cabinet meeting held to address impending fuel shortages.

The adjustments are set to alleviate the financial strain on freight operators, according to RFNSW CEO Simon O’Hara, who emphasised the measures’ significance in maintaining the flow of essential goods across Australia.

“Truck operators are crucial in sustaining Australia’s supply chain, and they face immense pressure due to escalating fuel costs and supply uncertainties,” O’Hara stated. “This relief is vital for operators unable to manage these rising expenses.”

National Fuel Security Plan

RFNSW also expressed approval for the newly introduced National Fuel Security Plan, developed alongside state and territory governments, which aims to ensure a consistent national response to fuel supply challenges. O’Hara highlighted the crucial role of a coordinated strategy in maintaining industry confidence and ensuring fuel availability for critical freight operations.

“Reliable and affordable fuel supply is the backbone of the freight industry,” O’Hara said. “A national approach is necessary to support operators, ensuring continued delivery of goods to businesses and communities across New South Wales and beyond.”

O’Hara reiterated RFNSW’s commitment to collaborating with the government and industry partners to ensure these measures provide tangible support to operators, stressing the importance of shared costs throughout the supply chain.

In addition to these measures, RFNSW is advocating for further long-term strategies that would provide sustainable fuel solutions. The organisation believes that investment in alternative fuel technologies and infrastructure is essential. Such measures would not only stabilise the current market but also prepare the industry for future challenges. By encouraging innovation and development in this sector, RFNSW aims to create a resilient framework that supports the freight industry in navigating the evolving economic landscape.
