Innovative Solutions for Energy Management on Farms

MELBOURNE — Australian farmers are increasingly turning to smart technology to manage energy costs and enhance efficiency, according to recent developments in the agricultural sector. Momentum Energy, an energy solutions provider, has highlighted the role of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) in helping farmers better control electricity usage and generate additional income.

Cam Taylor, Head of Energy Solutions at Momentum Energy, noted that as energy prices rise, it’s crucial for farmers to optimise investments in infrastructure like solar panels and batteries. Taylor emphasised, “As energy and other input prices continue to trend upwards, helping farmers maximise those energy investments is going to be increasingly important.”

Virtual Power Plants and Solar Sharing

Virtual Power Plants allow farmers to connect energy assets such as batteries and generators to the grid, enabling them to earn financial rewards while supporting energy supply and demand balance. This technology is particularly beneficial for operations in horticulture, viticulture, and dairy, where energy needs can be substantial.

Momentum Energy has introduced a concept called Virtual Solar Sharing, allowing farmers with multiple sites to utilise excess solar power generation from one location to offset electricity costs at another. This approach can provide a higher return than selling excess power back to the grid, maximizing the potential of farms with high solar capabilities.

The adoption of such technologies is part of a broader trend towards sustainable farming practices and energy efficiency in Australia, driven by the increasing integration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind into the national grid. This transition is essential not only for reducing costs but also for ensuring the long-term sustainability and resilience of the agricultural sector in the face of climate change and fluctuating energy markets.
