One Company Banned Following Investigation

MELBOURNE — The Essential Services Commission has announced that two businesses have forfeited a total of $4.2 million in energy efficiency certificates following allegations of false claims and breaches of consumer protections. One company, Energy Efficient Upgrades, has been banned from the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) programme for five years, according to the commission.

The commission revealed that Energy Efficient Upgrades, operated by Shantey Pty Ltd, and its contractors allegedly staged photos and engaged in banned sales tactics to falsely claim eligibility for certificates. As a result, 2,586 certificates, valued at over $200,000, have been surrendered.

Details on the Commission’s Actions

Another company, Ecosaver Australia, has been accused of similar breaches, including falsifying photo evidence for energy efficiency projects. The commission has refused to register 48,550 certificates from Ecosaver, worth approximately $4 million. Both companies can apply for a review of these decisions, but the commission’s current stance reflects a strong commitment to maintaining integrity within the VEU program.

Gerard Brody, Chairperson of the Essential Services Commission, emphasised the importance of compliance, stating, “This action against Energy Efficient Upgrades and Ecosaver Australia shows the commission is serious about stamping out unacceptable behaviour in the VEU program and putting consumers first.”

This announcement comes as part of broader efforts to ensure fairness and consumer confidence in energy efficiency initiatives. The commission continues to monitor and enforce regulations to support businesses that adhere to the rules. the penalties imposed serve as a warning to other businesses, highlighting that any attempt to circumvent the program’s regulations will not be tolerated. The ongoing oversight by the commission aims to create a level playing field for all participants and ensure that the benefits of energy efficiency initiatives are genuinely achieved.
