Enhancing Secure Transactions with AI
On June 10th, Visa announced a collaboration with OpenAI to integrate secure payment solutions into AI-driven commerce environments. The announcement was made at the Visa Payments Forum in San Francisco. This partnership leverages Visa’s global network and security infrastructure to support agentic commerce experiences.
The Visa Intelligent Commerce initiative is part of this collaboration, aiming to extend secure payment capabilities into new digital spaces. It explores enterprise applications, including developer experiences powered by Codex and more automated workflows using AI.
Jack Forestell, Visa’s Chief Product and Strategy Officer, highlighted the transformative potential of AI in commerce. He stated, “AI will transform commerce more profoundly than the internet or mobile technology ever did.” Visa is committed to ensuring transactions remain trusted and secure.
Integration with OpenAI
Developers and merchants will be able to accept Visa payments through AI agents, streamlining the payment process. Visa will provide tokenization and real-time fraud monitoring to ensure security and consumer protection during transactions.
Marco Mahrus, Head of Partnerships at OpenAI, noted the growing role of AI agents in commerce, saying, “Commerce is going to happen in many more places and in many more ways than it does today.” He emphasised the importance of building secure and transparent infrastructure for these transactions.
Transactions will operate under user-defined permissions, such as spending limits and required approvals. This structure is designed to maintain security while offering new AI-enabled payment experiences. Tokenized Visa credentials and real-time authorisation will support these transactions, helping maintain strong security and consumer protection.
The collaboration is part of a broader effort to expand AI-powered commerce. Visa’s global network, credentialing capabilities, and security infrastructure are crucial in this expansion. Enhanced capabilities enable new, innovative payment experiences across various commerce environments.
Visa and OpenAI are also exploring a range of enterprise applications, focusing on developer-centric experiences and more automated, conversational workflows. The collaboration aims to help consumers and businesses interact and transact with confidence as AI becomes a key interface for digital interactions.
