World-First Protection Initiative
Western Australia has announced a groundbreaking move to offer free RSV immunisation to all infants born between 1 October 2025 and 31 March 2026. This initiative, effective immediately, aims to shield the community’s youngest members from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) during vulnerable winter months. The programme introduces nirsevimab, also known as Beyfortus, to provide additional protection for babies, irrespective of whether their mothers received the RSV vaccine during pregnancy.
Importance of Timing in Immunisation
Catherine Hughes AM, Founder and Director of the Immunisation Foundation of Australia, expressed her enthusiasm: “This is wonderful news for Western Australian babies and their families. Parents can now protect their babies from birth, when they are most vulnerable, and if needed, again ahead of winter when RSV cases and hospital admissions spike.” Medical experts emphasise that this immunisation will help reduce hospital admissions during winter, a period when RSV cases typically surge. Maternal antibodies protect infants for up to six months, and the direct immunisation extends this protection.
Leading the charge in RSV surveillance and research, Western Australia has been at the forefront of combating infant respiratory illnesses. The state was the first to fund infant RSV immunisation and continues to set an example for others. By April 2026, thousands of babies will have received the immunisation, significantly mitigating the risk of severe RSV illnesses. Health professionals have lauded the program, highlighting its importance in safeguarding infants.
The Immunisation Foundation of Australia and health authorities encourage other states and territories to follow Western Australia’s lead, ensuring no baby is left unprotected during the RSV season. This initiative marks a critical step in public health efforts, as RSV remains a primary cause of hospitalisation for infants. Further information can be accessed through the Australian Immunisation Handbook, which provides comprehensive details on the program.
