Australians' Diverse Easter Flavours
In Sydney, Australia, more than 61% of Australians are planning to indulge in chocolate or Easter treats over the long weekend, as revealed by new research from MyFitnessPal, a global nutrition and food tracking app. Milk chocolate emerges as the clear favourite among the surveyed, followed by dark chocolate, hot cross buns, and white chocolate.
Nutritionist and MyFitnessPal ambassador, Michaela Sparrow, emphasised, "Celebrations like Easter are an important part of Australia’s food culture, and enjoying these foods in moderation can absolutely be part of a healthy, balanced diet – especially when there’s no guilt attached."
The survey, which included over a thousand Australians, highlighted that milk chocolate is the top choice for Easter, followed by other favourites such as dark chocolate, hot cross buns, and white chocolate. This preference for milk chocolate reflects its enduring popularity across the nation.
Easter Treats: A Variety of Choices
MyFitnessPal's food logging data shows that plain hot cross buns account for 67% of all entries during Easter. However, Australians are exploring other flavours, with fruit (14%), chocolate (13%), and apple & cinnamon (6%) varieties also being savoured by many.
Michaela Sparrow noted the nutritional differences, "While plain buns remain the most popular, fruit varieties offer a small boost in fiber, whereas chocolate-filled options are more energy-dense. Being mindful of these differences helps people make choices that suit their health goals, while still enjoying the festive spirit."
The Easter weekend is not just about flavours; it’s also about when people enjoy them. The most common time for Australians to log their Easter treats is between 5–8pm, which accounts for nearly a quarter of all food logs on the app last year. This trend underscores the evening as a popular time for indulging in festive treats.
Michaela encourages Australians to enjoy the Easter break with balance in mind, highlighting that maintaining awareness of what you eat, supported by tracking your nutrition, can empower individuals to make mindful, stress-free choices. "Tracking your nutrition through apps and tools, like MyFitnessPal, are a great way to take the guesswork out of food choices this weekend and plan for the right nutrition goals that work for you," she added.
