Community Effort Supports Cancer Society
On 1st May, Whanganui’s Relay for Life raised $86,000 to support the Cancer Society, reaching nearly 70% of its $125,000 target. This community event attracted 600 participants, including 95 cancer survivors, all gathered to show solidarity and raise funds for essential cancer care and prevention services.
Rapid Relief Team (RRT) volunteers ensured that all funds raised could be directed to the Cancer Society’s services by providing a free lunch service. Their contribution was vital in making sure every dollar went towards patient care, family support, and cancer prevention programmes.
Belinda Pilcher, Event Coordinator for Whanganui’s Relay for Life, emphasised RRT’s pivotal role, commenting, “RRT’s support and involvement were absolutely instrumental.”
Community Contributions Shine
Local group All about Whanau surpassed their fundraising targets through a yard sale, an art auction, and an Easter raffle. Meanwhile, the Suzuki Swifts collected significant donations, and Whanganui High School excelled among schools for their fundraising efforts.
Paul Simmons, RRT New Zealand’s General Manager, expressed pride in the team’s efforts. “Relay for Life brings together the Whanganui community to support those affected by cancer, and RRT is proud to play a part in that,” he said. RRT, as the charitable arm of Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, supports communities across New Zealand and globally, offering food, donations, and practical assistance in crises.
Established in 2013, RRT aids communities through emergency relief and frontline worker support, helping those facing hardship. The funds from the Relay for Life will enhance Cancer Society services, including patient care, family support, and cancer prevention programmes in Whanganui. Events like these aim to foster a cancer-free future.
