Community Unites for Cancer Support

Whanganui's Relay for Life event, held on 1st May 2026, successfully raised $86,000 for the Cancer Society. The event engaged 600 participants, including 95 cancer survivors, who came together to show solidarity.

Funds raised will support vital services offered by the Cancer Society, such as patient care, family support, and cancer prevention programs. Despite not reaching the $125,000 target, the event achieved nearly 70% of this ambitious goal.

Volunteers from the Rapid Relief Team (RRT) played a pivotal role by providing a free lunch service to all participants. Their contribution helped ensure that every dollar collected was directed towards the society's essential services.

Fundraising Efforts and Community Impact

Local fundraising group All about Whanau exceeded their goal through a series of creative initiatives, including a yard sale, an art auction, and an Easter raffle. Meanwhile, Whanganui High School emerged as the top fundraising school, contributing significantly to the overall amount raised.

Belinda Pilcher, the event coordinator, praised the efforts of RRT, stating, "RRT’s support and involvement were absolutely instrumental." She emphasised that the event was not only a fundraising success but also a powerful demonstration of community spirit.

Paul Simmons, General Manager of RRT New Zealand, highlighted the community's unity, saying, "Relay for Life brings together the Whanganui community to support those affected by cancer, and RRT is proud to play a part in that." His statement reflects RRT's commitment to community support.

RRT, the charitable arm of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, is dedicated to supporting communities across New Zealand. They provide emergency relief, assist frontline workers, and offer help to those facing hardship. Their global network includes over 16,500 volunteers who are ready to assist in times of need.

The Relay for Life in Whanganui is more than just a fundraising event; it's a platform for remembrance, solidarity, and a collective commitment to a cancer-free future. The participation of 95 cancer survivors serves as an inspiring testament to the resilience and courage of those affected by cancer.

As the community reflects on the success of this year's event, plans are already underway for the next Relay for Life, aiming to surpass previous fundraising achievements and continue supporting the Cancer Society's vital work.
