Community Effort Boosts Cancer Society Support
On 1st May, Whanganui’s annual Relay for Life event successfully raised $86,000 to support the Cancer Society. This substantial amount will assist in patient care, family support, and prevention programs. The event, however, fell short of its $125,000 target, achieving almost 70% of it.
Approximately 600 participants joined the event, including 95 cancer survivors. Their presence highlighted the community’s commitment to fighting cancer. The event was not just a fundraiser but a show of solidarity and remembrance.
The Rapid Relief Team (RRT), a charitable wing of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, played a crucial role by providing a free lunch service. This contribution ensured that all funds raised could directly support the Cancer Society’s services. RRT’s involvement was praised by Event Coordinator Belinda Pilcher as “absolutely instrumental” in the event’s success.
Fundraising Highlights and Community Impact
Local groups made significant contributions to the fundraising efforts. ‘All about Whanau’ exceeded their goals through a yard sale, art auction, and Easter raffle. The Suzuki Swifts collected substantial donations, and Whanganui High School raised the most among participating schools.
Paul Simmons, RRT New Zealand’s General Manager, expressed pride in their participation. “Relay for Life brings together the Whanganui community to support those affected by cancer,” he stated, “and RRT is proud to play a part in that.”
RRT, established in 2013, supports New Zealand communities through emergency relief, aid to frontline workers, and assistance to those facing hardship. Their involvement in Relay for Life exemplifies their dedication to helping those in need.
Donations can still be made through the Relay for Life website. The event stands as a testament to Whanganui’s dedication to supporting cancer patients and their families. It brought together survivors, supporters, and volunteers, strengthening community bonds in Whanganui.
The funds raised will support crucial Cancer Society services, including patient care, family support, and cancer prevention programs. The event’s success was also a result of community initiatives and the collective effort of various groups.
