ABC Cuts Ties with ACON Amid Editorial Concerns

Calls for Governor-General to Act

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) ended its relationship with the LGBTIQA+ activist group ACON on April 9, 2026. This decision addressed growing concerns about potential compromises to the ABC’s editorial independence. Many view this action as a significant step towards safeguarding media impartiality.

Family First National Director Lyle Shelton, who is also a candidate for the New South Wales Legislative Council, praised the move. “The women’s rights advocate Sall Grover is right — the ABC’s belated decision is a turning point in reclaiming truth over ideology,” he stated. Shelton’s remarks emphasise the broader implications of the ABC’s actions on media independence.

According to Shelton, the Governor-General should mirror the ABC by severing ties with Equality Australia. He considers this group politically radical and argues that such affiliations compromise the neutrality expected of high public offices.

Pressure on Governor-General

Governor-General Sam Mostyn faces criticism for her role as co-patron of Equality Australia. Shelton argues that this position jeopardizes the impartiality required of her office. It is essential, he insists, for the Governor-General to avoid political affiliations to maintain public trust and respect.

Shelton urges Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to advise the Governor-General against associating with activist groups. “The Prime Minister must ensure the office of Governor-General remains above ideological activism and is worthy of the respect of all Australians,” he said. Such a move is deemed crucial to maintaining confidence in the Governor-General’s ability to represent all Australians impartially.

The ABC’s decision to cut ties with ACON follows longstanding concerns about its reporting on issues like gender and women’s rights. Critics argue that the ABC’s involvement with ACON may have influenced its coverage of controversial topics, including experimental child gender treatments.

Highlighting further concerns, Shelton mentions the inappropriateness of the Governor-General’s patronage of Equality Australia, especially given its support for legal actions against him. He has been involved in court proceedings for six years, facing legal challenges from two drag queens over his criticisms of their suitability as children’s role models.

This situation underscores the broader debate about the influence of activist groups in public institutions. It raises questions about balancing freedom of association with the need for impartiality in public roles. As this discourse continues, the actions of both the ABC and the Governor-General will likely remain under scrutiny.
