Battery Storage in Victoria Gains Momentum

Akaysha Energy has commenced construction on its Elaine Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Victoria, following the successful close of a $460 million construction financing round. This significant financing is a major step forward for Australia’s energy transition, marking one of the country’s most important renewable energy infrastructure projects.

Elaine BESS will boast a capacity of 300MW/1200MWh, offering up to four hours of energy storage. This capability is expected to enhance the reliability of electricity supply in Victoria, integrating more renewable energy into the market. Akaysha Energy, founded in 2021, focuses on large-scale battery storage systems and is committed to promoting a low-carbon future. They have active projects in Australia, Japan, and North America, operating 1.4GWh globally and having 4.5GWh under construction.

Elaine BESS is Akaysha Energy’s first venture in Victoria, marking a milestone in their expansion. Importantly, battery energy storage systems like Elaine BESS store electricity generated from renewable sources such as wind and solar, making it available when demand is high or generation is low. This project will play a crucial role in providing secure and reliable energy to the state.
