Humanitarian Mission Intercepted by Israeli Forces

Six Australian citizens participating in a humanitarian mission to deliver aid to Gaza have been taken hostage by Israeli naval forces. This incident took place in international waters west of Crete on the night of 29th April.

The Australians were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, intercepted by the Israeli navy 1,400 km away from Gaza. The flotilla comprised 58 boats, of which 22 were surrounded and illegally intercepted.

Israeli authorities reportedly captured 175 participants, including Australians Bianca Webb-Pullman, Ethan Floyd, Zack Schofield, Neve O'Connor, Surya McEwen, and Cameron Tribe.

Families Plead for Government Action

Families of the detained Australians are urging the government to intervene. Joanne Jaworowski, Zack Schofield’s mother, expressed her concerns at a press conference, stating, "I've asked Minister Wong's office, Sharon Claydon's office, and DFAT to call me and let me know exactly what they're doing and what they have done to secure everyone's safety."

Despite the interception, the flotilla aims to continue its mission towards Greek waters. Anny Mokotow and Sam Woripa Watson, two other Australians, remain with the flotilla and are currently in Greek territorial waters.

Neve O'Connor, one of the Australians currently held hostage, stated on Instagram, "We are in the sight of a potential warship from an unknown entity. We don't know what's going on. We're completely at a loss, our radios have been jammed, there's drone activity… we're preparing for interception."

Zack Schofield, also aboard the flotilla, added, "We've had drones flying over us all night and there are many reports of warships and tactical RIBs with tactical units on board shining lights and harassing the fleet."

Mehreen Faruqi, Deputy Leader of the Australian Greens, criticised the Australian government for its lack of action, saying, "This is a legal, lawful, peaceful, humanitarian mission that they are on. It is Minister Wong's job to protect Australian citizens and to look after their safety."

Simon Jones, head of the Australian delegation of the Global Movement to Gaza, called for an international response, stating, "We demand that Minister Penny Wong and the Department of Foreign Affairs issue an unequivocal condemnation of Israel's actions as a violation of international law."

Snap rallies are being organised in Australia to show solidarity with those taken hostage. Details on these rallies can be found at let-aid-flow.carrd.co.
