Positive Sideline Behaviour Encouraged
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have thrown their support behind the NSW Government’s Shoosh for Kids campaign. This initiative aims to promote positive sideline behaviour at junior sports events during the winter season.
With participation from over 1,000 sports clubs and 33 State Sporting Organisations, the Bulldogs are collaborating with the NSW Office of Sport to ensure junior sports are fun and inclusive for children. Spectators are encouraged to keep their comments positive or to ‘shoosh’ if they have nothing supportive to contribute.
The Shoosh for Kids programme offers free resources to clubs and associations to help spread the message and maintain a positive environment. Recently, the Bulldogs visited junior players from the Milperra Colts Junior Rugby League Club at Brighton. There, they talked about the significance of maintaining a positive atmosphere during games.
Adam Berry, Deputy Secretary of the Office of Sport, emphasised, “It’s a chance for kids to have fun, make friends, and learn new skills. As spectators, we need to ensure junior sport is fun for kids so that they keep playing and enjoying the benefits it offers.” The campaign is designed to remind adults that junior sports are about community and enjoyment, not professional-level competition.
Community and Club Involvement
Aaron Warburton, CEO of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, expressed his support by stating, “Rugby league should be a place where every child feels safe, supported, and free to enjoy the game they love. The message is simple: keep it positive, keep it fun.” The Bulldogs’ involvement highlights their commitment to fostering a supportive environment for young athletes.
Matt Burton, a Bulldogs player, also highlighted the initiative’s importance, noting, “Kids should be free to enjoy their sport in a positive environment, and this campaign is a great reminder to spectators to respect that.” His perspective as a professional player underscores the impact of positive support from the sidelines.
Katie Lawrence, President of the Milperra Colts, mentioned, “Shoosh for Kids really speaks to the environment we want to create for our young players. It’s about respect and enjoyment for everyone involved.” The integration of this initiative into local clubs aims to cultivate an encouraging atmosphere for all young participants.

The campaign continues to gain traction, aiming to create an enjoyable and welcoming environment for young athletes across New South Wales. The Bulldogs’ endorsement adds significant momentum to this important community initiative.
