Experts Explain Link Between Climate and Cyclones

SYDNEY — Cyclone Narelle is advancing towards the Queensland coast, Northern Territory, and Western Australia, with its intensity attributed to climate change, the Climate Council reported. This development underscores the heightened impact of climate pollution on tropical cyclones.

According to the Climate Council’s recent report, “Breakneck Speed: Summer of Climate Whiplash,” the burning of fossil fuels has raised ocean temperatures, fostering more powerful cyclones. Sea surface temperatures around Australia’s coast hit record highs in 2025, reaching 0.93°C above the 1961–1990 average.

Impact of Warmer Oceans on Cyclone Formation

The report highlights that ten of Australia’s warmest ocean years occurred since 2010. Rising ocean temperatures provide cyclones with additional energy, potentially increasing their destructiveness. This increase in sea temperatures is a significant factor in cyclone formation, which typically requires water temperatures above 26.5°C.

In light of these findings, communities along the coast are urged to strengthen their disaster preparedness plans. The government and local authorities are advised to invest in infrastructure improvements and community education programs. These efforts are crucial for minimizing damage and ensuring public safety. The collaboration between meteorologists, climate scientists, and policymakers is essential in developing effective strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate-related natural disasters. As Cyclone Narelle approaches, monitoring and timely communication will be key in preventing loss of life and reducing property damage. The situation serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for global action to address the root causes of climate change and enhance resilience against its inevitable effects.
