Amid Melbourne’s escalating crime crisis, the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has called for urgent statewide action. Since February 2026, more than 40 violent incidents, including firebombings, shootings, and kidnappings, have plagued the city’s nightlife venues, creating significant concerns about safety and business stability.
These incidents have particularly affected nightclubs, bars, and restaurants, prompting the Chamber to advocate for a comprehensive strategy involving Victoria Police, Fire Rescue Victoria, the courts, and government officials. The aim is to restore confidence in Melbourne’s nighttime economy, which generates around $5 billion annually and supports 34,000 jobs.
Increasing Pressure on Businesses
Acting Chief Executive of the Victorian Chamber, Amelia Bitsis, emphasised the unprecedented pressure on businesses, stating, “Businesses are operating under an unprecedented level of pressure and uncertainty. Crime has become one of the most significant concerns facing the Victorian business community.”
As a result of these violent incidents, businesses report increased operational and security costs, with some considering changing trading hours or relocating. One in five businesses estimates crime-related costs between $50,000 and $100,000, a burden many cannot bear.
Bitsis added, “Our business community cannot continue absorbing the financial and emotional toll this violence is creating. Restoring safety and confidence in our nighttime economy must become an immediate priority.”
With businesses also contending with economic pressures from the tobacco wars, rising costs, and global instability, a coordinated response is crucial for maintaining Melbourne’s reputation and economic health.
Melbourne’s status as a vibrant, world-class city is under threat. Addressing the frequency and severity of violent incidents through a unified response is now essential. The Chamber seeks the involvement of the Attorney-General, Police Minister, and industry leaders.
