Initial data centres portfolio has 450MW secured
Hyperscale data centres are planned for Sydney and Melbourne under a 50% joint venture between EdgeConneX and Stockland, with 450MW of power secured for the initial portfolio in the two cities.
The companies said the partnership will develop, own and operate a portfolio of data centres across Australia, starting with Sydney and Melbourne. They are also progressing additional power applications and planning.
Justin Louis, chief investment officer at Stockland, said: “Our partnership with EdgeConneX brings together Stockland’s local development capabilities and EdgeConneX’s international hyperscale and AI Factory experience. Together, we are creating a strong platform to support the responsible growth of Australia’s digital economy.”
Maher to lead Australian business
EdgeConneX has also appointed Chris Maher as managing director for Australia to lead its Australian business and market development strategy. The company said Maher has more than 20 years of experience across digital infrastructure, asset management and finance in Asia Pacific and the United States, including data centre development and operations and large-scale infrastructure investment.
Maher said: “Australia has a significant opportunity to become a leading market for digital infrastructure and AI.”
EdgeConneX has joined Data Centres Australia as a principal member. The industry body said EdgeConneX would join its base of more than 100 members.
According to Data Centres Australia’s latest Economic Impact report, capturing the AI export market could add up to $4.1 billion in additional annual economic activity by 2030 and support up to 17,120 more jobs, on top of projected activity and job creation from meeting domestic demand.
