Strategic Investments and Celebrations
The Estée Lauder Companies announced plans to strengthen their UK manufacturing network with a strategic investment in their Whitman facility, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary in Petersfield, England.
Whitman Facility: A Pillar of Global Operations
Established in 1966, the Whitman facility plays a crucial role in Estée Lauder’s global manufacturing operations. It produces skincare and fragrance products for renowned brands like Jo Malone London, Estée Lauder, Clinique, and AERIN. Annually, the facility manufactures over 90 million units for distribution across Europe and select global markets.
William P. Lauder, Chair of the Board of Directors, stated, “For sixty years, Whitman has reflected the craftsmanship, quality, and innovation that have defined The Estée Lauder Companies since my grandparents founded the business.”
The company will integrate select luxury candle and home fragrance capabilities from Contract Candles, a long-standing partner. This integration involves assuming the lease of one of Contract Candles’ UK facilities and welcoming approximately 50 employees into the organisation.
Following the integration, the UK will serve as the primary manufacturing base for candles across Estée Lauder’s prestige brand portfolio, including Jo Malone London, TOM FORD, and AERIN brands. This move enhances operational control and long-term resilience in a strategically important category.
Roberto Canevari, Executive Vice President, Chief Value Chain Officer, remarked, “This investment in candle and home fragrance manufacturing reflects our continued commitment to British craftsmanship and innovation.”
Home fragrance remains a growth area for Estée Lauder, particularly for the Jo Malone London brand, which leads the UK’s luxury home fragrance sector. The integration will boost the UK’s role as a centre of excellence for fragrance craftsmanship and manufacturing.
Since fiscal 2020, The Estée Lauder Companies has invested $72 million in the Whitman facility. This investment focuses on enhancing automation, quality systems, and sustainability initiatives. These efforts include partnerships with local universities for apprenticeship and STEM outreach programmes.
The strategic investment not only underscores Estée Lauder’s dedication to British artisanal skills but also reinforces the company’s commitment to growth and innovation in the prestige fragrance market.
