The Bullwinkel Project Explores WWII History
The Australian College of Nursing Foundation is set to present a historic documentary at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra on 9th May 2026. The Bullwinkel Project Documentary pays tribute to Lieutenant Colonel Vivian Bullwinkel and the 21 nurses killed during World War II.
The film details the tragic events of the sinking of the Vyner Brooke and the Radji Beach massacre in Sumatra, Indonesia. It also highlights the Australian College of Nursing Foundation’s efforts to memorialize these nurses through the Bullwinkel Project.
ACN President Kath Stein and filmmaker Ashley Starkey will host the premiere. Special guests include Trish Cook MP, Member for Bullwinkel, and John Bullwinkel, nephew of Vivian Bullwinkel.
Honoring Nursing Heroes
The ACN Foundation’s mission to honour the sacrifices of the nurses is underscored by the documentary. The initiative culminated in the launch of the Bullwinkel Scholars Programme and the unveiling of a statue at the War Memorial.
“This premiere is a moment of deep significance for Australian nursing and our national history,” stated Adjunct Professor Kathryn Zeitz, CEO of the Australian College of Nursing.
The event will highlight the ongoing work of the Vivian Bullwinkel Scholars Program, which supports future nursing leaders. Public donations are encouraged through the ACN Foundation website.
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs funded the documentary, and the event is sponsored by Serco and the Australian War Memorial. Registration for the premiere closes on 4th May 2026, with tickets available online.
