Airbnb homes highlight Victoria’s shift to regional escapes and short stays

Airbnb has released a selection of its Most Wishlisted homes in Australia for 2026, with Victorian properties featuring prominently as traveller behaviour shifts towards shorter, regional stays. The data highlights growing demand for local escapes, with travellers favouring low-pressure trips over extended holidays.

The release reflects a broader movement described as ‘Weekending’, where Australians prioritise regular, short getaways within driving distance of major cities. According to Airbnb data, nearly 80% of travellers report that shorter trips are less stressful and more enjoyable than longer breaks. Additionally, almost half of working Australians indicate that a two to three-hour drive is sufficient to disconnect and recharge.

Among the Victorian properties included in the Most Wishlisted selection are Secluded Off-Grid Tiny House With Bath On The Deck in Chum Creek and Star Gazing Bubble ‘Etoile’ in Agnes. These listings align with emerging preferences for immersive and nature-focused accommodation experiences.

Key travel trends shaping Airbnb homes in 2026

Tiny homes continue to rank among the most wishlisted properties, as travellers increasingly seek minimalist environments that offer privacy and simplicity. This trend reflects a move towards stripped-back stays that prioritise experience over size or luxury.

At the same time, demand for rural and off-grid accommodation has strengthened. Listings featuring terms such as rainforest and seclusion appear frequently among top-saved properties, indicating a shift towards nature-led travel. These properties provide isolation from urban environments while remaining accessible for short trips.

Transparent dome and bubble-style accommodation has also gained traction. This format allows guests to sleep under the stars, contributing to the rise of stargazing as a key factor in booking decisions. As a result, visually unique stays continue to perform strongly in wishlist rankings.

Outdoor bathing features have emerged as another consistent element across leading properties. Outdoor baths and hot tubs are now positioned as primary features rather than secondary amenities, with travellers actively seeking these elements when browsing listings.

Susan Wheeldon, Country Manager for Airbnb Australia and New Zealand, said: “‘Weekending’ signals a shift in what Australians are looking for from travel. It’s less about planning big, overseas holidays and more about building regular moments of escape from everyday life. This Wishlist reflects a desire for digital detox and local travel. As people look for ways to disconnect and reset, our Most Wishlisted Airbnbs for 2026 point to a desire for nature-led stays — from tiny homes to off-grid retreats — that offer accessibility and a chance to reset.”

The findings indicate that short-distance travel and regional accommodation will continue to influence booking behaviour throughout 2026. Furthermore, the prominence of Victorian listings reinforces the state’s role in meeting demand for accessible, nature-based experiences.
