HOYTS APEX introduces 21 metre LED screen at Melbourne Central
HOYTS has launched its APEX LED cinema experience at Melbourne Central, bringing a 21 metre screen into the CBD as part of its latest push into premium viewing. The site now serves as the Victorian flagship for the technology, following its earlier rollout at HOYTS Karrinyup.
Unlike traditional projection, the system uses direct-view LED to deliver higher brightness, deeper blacks and stronger contrast across every scene. The screen carries more than 17 million pixels and is fully acoustically transparent, allowing sound to pass through the display rather than around it. As a result, audio remains tightly synced with what is on screen.
HOYTS Group CEO and President Damian Keogh said the launch marks a shift in expectations for cinema audiences.
“HOYTS APEX represents a defining moment for HOYTS and for cinema more broadly, setting a new benchmark for what the big screen experience can be,” Damian said.
“What sets APEX apart is its combination of a curved LED screen of spectacular scale, cutting-edge LED technology delivering true pixel perfection and Dolby Atmos surround sound, bringing every moment to life with remarkable clarity and depth.
“We’re proud to introduce this new format at Melbourne Central, reinforcing its position as the leading cinema destination in Victoria.”
The move lands as cinema operators face increasing pressure to draw audiences back into physical venues. Streaming has reset expectations, so exhibitors are investing in experiences that offer a clear point of difference. In this case, HOYTS is focusing on scale, clarity and sound precision to justify the premium.
GDC Technology Chairman and CEO Dr. Man Nang Chong said the system delivers a measurable lift in performance.
“The LED system behind HOYTS APEX offers 30 times better picture contrast and millions more pixels than traditional cinema projection, resulting in remarkable clarity and detail,” he said.
“The screen itself is acoustically transparent, allowing sound to pass seamlessly through the movie, so audio aligns precisely with what is on screen, creating a level of immersion and precision unlike anything Australian cinemagoers have experienced before.”
Upcoming titles scheduled on the screen include Michael, released on 22nd April, The Devil Wears Prada 2, released on 30th April, Mortal Kombat II on 7th May, and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu on 21st May.
