Incentive Deadline Approaches for Patent Owners

Datang Mobile, KPN, NEC, and Wilus have joined the Sisvel point of sale (POS) patent pool, announced at the beginning of April. This addition expands the pool’s roster to 11 licensors, including BlackBerry, Huawei, JVCKENWOOD, LG Electronics, Nokia, Sisvel, and SK Telecom. These companies together offer their 2G-5G cellular technology patents through the programme.

Launched in April, the Sisvel POS patent pool aims to standardise access to essential cellular technologies for point-of-sale devices. Founding members include Huawei, LG Electronics, and Nokia. Sven Törringer, the POS programme manager, highlighted the positive market response, stating, “We have received a great response from the market so far, and I am pleased to welcome Datang, KPN, NEC, and Wilus as the latest licensors.”

The pool is the first in the market to address the POS vertical. Cellular patent owners interested in participating should contact Sisvel promptly as the early participation incentive ends on 15th May. Mika Viertio, Nokia’s Head of IoT Licensing Program, commented, “As a leader in wireless connectivity, we are making it simpler for point-of-sale device vendors worldwide to access essential wireless technologies.”

Huawei’s Emil Zhang emphasised the role of POS devices in the cashless economy, saying, “We are pleased to make our relevant standard essential patents available to the POS industry through the Sisvel pool.” He noted that this facilitates better connectivity for business owners and the public.

Sisvel’s commitment to fostering innovation is evident through its collaborative efforts in the patent pool. The initiative aims to create a level playing field for patent owners and licensees by providing flexible and efficient commercialisation solutions. According to the company, there are many more companies in the pipeline, indicating potential future growth for the programme.
