Five New Stations to Boost Connectivity

Jacobs, in a joint venture with GHD and WSP, has been appointed to design five new underground stations for the Sydney Metro West project. This was announced on 22nd April 2026, marking a significant step in enhancing Sydney's transportation network.

The Sydney Metro West alignment will extend 24 kilometers, connecting Greater Parramatta to Sydney's central business district. This expansion aims to provide fast and reliable transport for the rapidly growing communities of Western Sydney.

The joint venture will deliver integrated engineering design services for the stations located at Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, and The Bays. A core focus is sustainability, with station designs targeting a 6-Star Green Star As Built rating.

Sustainability and Engineering Focus

Stations Package West is being delivered by Gamuda as the lead contractor. Jacobs, GHD, and WSP are providing design expertise, a continuation of Jacobs' involvement with previous Sydney Metro West packages.

Sinead Giblin, Jacobs Executive Vice President, expressed enthusiasm, saying, "Jacobs’ appointment, alongside our JV partners, builds on our track record supporting transformative rail investments in Australia and globally."

Gamuda Project Director Richard Petaccia emphasised the project's importance, stating, "Gamuda is very pleased to partner with the NSW Government and the Sydney Metro Team to deliver another vital package for Sydney Metro West."

Sydney Metro West represents one of Australia's largest public transport initiatives. It is expected to dramatically improve connections and bolster economic growth across Sydney's inner and western suburbs.

The project includes significant infrastructure upgrades, with the development of new housing, jobs, and local services along the metro corridor. This aligns with the government's commitment to sustainable urban development and improved public transport access.

The involvement of Jacobs, ranked No. 2 in Transportation by Engineering News-Record, underscores the project's global significance. Jacobs has previously contributed to major projects like New York's Grand Central Madison and the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit in Malaysia.

As the Sydney Metro West project progresses, it is expected to complete by late 2025. This timeline reflects the ambitious scope and essential nature of the initiative, aimed at reshaping Sydney's transportation landscape.
