Graduate Programme Supports New Health Careers
Hollie Stein, who was treated as a premature baby at Joondalup Health Campus, has returned to the facility as a nurse, completing a full circle moment. Now 19, she rejoined the hospital where she spent her initial 14 days of life after being born at 34 weeks prematurely.
During her early days, Hollie received care from dedicated midwives, nurses, and paediatricians in the Neonatal Unit. Her experiences there inspired her nursing career, bringing her back to Joondalup Health Campus as a Graduate Enrolled Nurse.
She is part of Ramsay Health Care’s Graduate Pathways Program, which supports new healthcare professionals through extensive training at the Nursing and Midwifery Academy. “I’ve wanted to be a nurse or midwife since primary school,” she shared, citing her own childhood surgeries and her mother’s career as inspirations.
Reuniting with Her Former Caregivers
Remarkably, some staff members who cared for Hollie as a newborn are still at Joondalup Health Campus. This includes Neonatal Nurse-Midwife Janet Walker, Paediatrician Dr. Brad Jongeling, and Staff Development Nurse Ann Cameron. Ann Cameron expressed her happiness, “It’s so nice that we’re starting to see our old patients come through and be passionate in their medical careers in the same way we are.”
Hollie completed placements in General Medicine and Palliative Care during her studies at the hospital. Her positive experiences led her to apply as a Graduate Enrolled Nurse in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a position she was thrilled to accept.
The Ramsay Graduate Pathways Programme has been integral in launching the careers of numerous healthcare professionals at Joondalup Health Campus. It offers a range of programmes from student placements to leadership mentorship, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled workers in the healthcare sector.
Hollie looks forward to further developing her skills and confidence at the hospital. “I enjoy helping people and hope to further my nursing studies in the future,” she stated, eager to contribute to the care of newborns and their families.
