Initiative Enhances Hospital Experience for Young Patients
JOONDALUP — Children at Joondalup Health Campus are enjoying a more vibrant hospital experience thanks to Supertees, a unique medical garment initiative. These creatively designed garments, which resemble fun costumes such as superheroes and ballerinas, are now available in the hospital’s Telethon Children’s Ward and Emergency Department, offering both comfort and easy access for medical treatments.
The initiative, funded by 7Telethon for three years, aims to alleviate the stress of hospital stays for young patients by providing them with these specially designed tees. According to Arlene Outhwaite, Clinical Nurse Manager at Joondalup Health Campus, the Supertees can be worn during medical procedures and have openings for tubes and temperature checks, making them both practical and enjoyable for the children.
Impact of Supertees on Hospital Stays
Each Supertee is presented in a decorative box filled with activities, creating a positive and engaging experience for the children. Svetlana Brushwood, whose daughter Eliana recently received a Supertee during her tonsillectomy, expressed her appreciation for the initiative, stating that it made the hospital experience more positive and that the tees could be worn outside the hospital as well.
The Supertees initiative highlights a growing trend in healthcare to improve the patient experience by incorporating elements of joy and comfort into medical settings. With over 4,000 children treated in the Telethon Children’s Ward last year, and 20,000 pediatric presentations in the Emergency Department, this programme is set to make a significant impact on the lives of young patients and their families.
Supertee, an Australian charity, distributes these garments nationwide, reaching various hospitals and paediatric wards to enhance the hospital experience for children across the country.
