Outdoor Cinema transforms Fed Square into Middle-earth for three nights
Fed Square will transform into Middle-earth this summer as Outdoor Cinema brings the Lord of the Rings Trilogy to Melbourne’s Big Screen. Across three nights, fans can experience the extended editions in an open-air setting rarely seen in the city.
The event invites audiences to gather in the heart of Melbourne for a shared cinematic journey. Each evening features one film from the trilogy, screened in full extended format. As a result, viewers gain access to additional scenes and deeper storytelling.
Outdoor Cinema arrives at Fed Square
Outdoor Cinema presents the trilogy across three consecutive nights, allowing the story to unfold as intended. Rather than compressing the experience, the schedule gives each chapter room to breathe.
Each screening includes a 15-minute intermission. This break allows audiences to relax, refresh, and prepare for the next act. Meanwhile, the scale of the Big Screen enhances the epic landscapes and battle sequences.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy stands among the most ambitious film projects ever made. Filmmakers shot the films back-to-back and released them annually from 2001 to 2003. The trilogy reshaped blockbuster cinema and revived fantasy storytelling for mainstream audiences.
In addition, the films cemented Peter Jackson’s status as a world-class director. They also helped establish New Zealand as a global centre for film production and visual effects.

A cinematic experience designed for everyone
Outdoor Cinema welcomes both devoted fans and first-time viewers. Long-time followers can revisit the extended editions in a communal setting. New audiences can discover the story as it unfolds across three nights.
Importantly, all screenings will feature burnt-in closed captions. This approach ensures greater accessibility for all attendees. Consequently, Fed Square continues its role as an inclusive cultural destination.
The outdoor setting adds another layer to the experience. As the sun sets, the city becomes part of the atmosphere. The space encourages people to settle in, connect, and enjoy cinema together.
Food, drinks and fellowship
No journey through Middle-earth feels complete without proper food. Throughout the event, Bilbo Snaggins will operate onsite as a themed food truck. The menu offers hearty bites and drinks inspired by a hobbit’s appetite.
Meanwhile, ACMI’s snack bar will open near the ACMI entrance in the upper square. Guests can purchase choc tops, popcorn, drinks, and classic cinema treats. As a result, attendees can stay comfortable for the full screening.
Together, the food options turn the screenings into a festival-style experience. Friends can gather early, eat well, and enjoy the evening from start to finish.

Three nights. One complete story.
By spreading the trilogy across three evenings, Outdoor Cinema respects the scale of the films. Each night focuses on a single chapter, allowing audiences to fully engage with the story.
Rather than rushing through the experience, viewers can return refreshed for the next instalment. This structure builds anticipation and emotional impact as the journey progresses.
