Historic Groundbreaking in Topolobampo
Pacífico Mexinol has initiated its pre-construction phase with a symbolic groundbreaking in Topolobampo, Sinaloa on 24th April 2026, marking a significant investment in the low-carbon chemical industry.
Rommel Gallo, CEO of Transition Industries, led the ceremony, accompanied by key figures including Ron Johnson, United States Ambassador to Mexico, and Dr. Vidal Llerenas from the Ministry of Economy. They emphasised the project's role in strengthening economic ties between Mexico and the United States.
The project is part of a broader initiative to create a Net Zero industrial model, bringing together governments, diplomats, and global investors. It aims to establish Topolobampo as a major industrial hub in North America, focusing on the production of blue and ultra-low carbon methanol.
Rommel Gallo highlighted, "Mexinol is a strategic platform for North America's competitiveness, generating economic value and quality jobs in Mexico and the United States. It integrates global resources, infrastructure, and capital to deliver a world-scale chemical facility."
Project Scope and Development
The $3.3 billion project is set to commence full construction in late 2026, with operations expected by 2029. It will produce 1.8 million MT of blue methanol and 350,000 MT of ultra-low carbon methanol annually.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, alongside investors from the US, Italy, Germany, and South Korea, supports the project. Companies like Mitsubishi Gas Chemical of Japan and Siemens Energy of Germany are also involved.
Ron Johnson remarked, "We are building the future of both of our countries and strengthening the kind of partnership that delivers tangible results for our people."
Field engineering work and site preparation are set to begin next month. The project is expected to generate over 6,000 construction jobs and at least 450 direct and indirect permanent jobs.
Mexinol's commitment to sustainability includes using treated wastewater, operating under a zero-discharge scheme, and creating a conservation zone to protect local ecosystems.
Community engagement remains a priority, with annual "Community Day" events planned to coincide with Earth Day, fostering public dialogue and support.
Multilateral organisations, such as export credit agencies from the United States, Italy, Germany, and South Korea, are also backing the project, reflecting broad international support.
Messages from the Ambassadors of Japan and Italy further showcased the wide-ranging diplomatic and financial backing for the initiative.
