Historic Ceremony Marks Gaudí’s Death Anniversary

Pope Leo XIV inaugurated the Tower of Jesus Christ at the Sagrada Família in Barcelona on 10th June. Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Antoni Gaudí’s death, this event marked a significant moment in the basilica’s history.

A solemn Mass dedicated to Antoni Gaudí began the inauguration ceremony. Presiding over the Mass, Pope Leo XIV was accompanied by 8,000 attendees, including Spain’s leading institutional authorities.

Rising to 172.5 metres, the newly inaugurated tower is now the tallest basilica in the world. This achievement represents a critical milestone in the completion of Gaudí’s original design for the Sagrada Família.

One hundred years have passed since the death of Antoni Gaudí, the visionary Catalan architect. His work transformed Barcelona’s skyline and remains one of the world’s most recognizable expressions of creativity and spirituality.

Ceremony Highlights

Following the Mass, Pope Leo XIV blessed the Tower of Jesus Christ, adding a unique spiritual dimension to the event. The presence of the Holy Father underscored the universal significance of Gaudí’s legacy.

A spectacular music and light show concluded the ceremony. As fireworks and drones illuminated the Barcelona sky, a children’s choir and live orchestra performed.

An image of Antoni Gaudí appeared in the sky during the drone show, symbolically contemplating his masterpiece. This tribute celebrated his enduring vision and creativity.

Generations of architects, artisans, builders, and donors have worked towards realising Gaudí’s vision for more than a century. The event honoured their contributions to bringing to life one of the most iconic architectural works.

Spain’s leading authorities emphasised the occasion’s historic, spiritual, and cultural significance. The Sagrada Família continues to be a symbol of architectural excellence and a testament to Gaudí’s artistic legacy.
