RACGP Urges NSW to Fund MenB Vaccine

Calls for Equitable Vaccine Access

Urgent calls are being made by the Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) for the New South Wales Government to include meningococcal B (MenB) vaccines in the state’s routine immunisation schedule. Current arrangements leave children at unnecessary risk of this dangerous disease, which can be fatal within hours of onset.

In New South Wales, families currently pay approximately $140 per MenB vaccine dose, creating financial barriers during a cost-of-living crisis. Survivors of meningococcal disease often face lifelong complications, highlighting the importance of accessible vaccination.

Dr Rebekah Hoffman, Chair of RACGP NSW, stressed the need for equitable vaccine access. She stated, “From a child-safety perspective, this is a gap we can’t ignore.” The RACGP believes that no child should lack protection due to financial constraints.

Equitable access to vaccination is critical for closing gaps in health outcomes. Funding MenB through a public programme will provide certainty for families and support GPs in protecting children, wherever they reside. Victoria’s recent decision to publicly fund MenB vaccines has been commended by the RACGP for reducing inequity and improving uptake.

Equity and Child Safety Concerns

Following Victoria’s example, the RACGP is advocating for similar measures in New South Wales. Dr Hoffman remarked, “Vaccination saves lives. Patients in New South Wales deserve a strong response, as we’ve seen in Queensland, South Australia, the NT, and recently, Victoria.” The delay in providing free MenB vaccination is concerning.

RACGP stands ready to collaborate with the NSW Government to enhance the state’s immunisation programme. Ensuring all children have access to this critical protection is essential. Funding MenB vaccines is a practical, preventive step that will protect children, reduce hospitalisations, and provide families with peace of mind across NSW.
