Electric Car Discount Spurs Sales

Australia has set a new record for electric vehicle sales in March, driven by soaring fuel prices and the Electric Car Discount. A total of 15,839 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were sold, according to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and the Electric Vehicle Council. This figure represented 14.6% of new car sales in March, almost double the share compared to the same month last year. For the year to date, BEVs account for 11.8% of new sales.

The Albanese Government’s Electric Car Discount has played a crucial role in this surge. Rohan Martin, CEO of the National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association (NALSPA), stated, “The fuel crisis has undoubtedly sparked unprecedented new interest in both new and used EVs, but it’s the Albanese Government’s Electric Car Discount that’s actually getting many Australians into one.”

Since early March, inquiries about novated leasing and the Electric Car Discount have flooded NALSPA members. March reported the strongest month for BEV orders, with BEVs forming the majority of leases for many members, compared to around half in a typical month.

Demand Surges Among Essential Workers Essential

Workers and employees on average or below-average incomes are increasingly turning to EVs. Many of these new buyers are from outer and regional areas, where longer commutes make fuel savings more attractive. These areas are also among those hardest hit by rising fuel costs, further incentivizing the shift to EVs.

EV drivers save approximately AUD 3,000 annually on running costs. When combined with a novated lease and the Electric Car Discount, total savings rise significantly. These incentives are crucial as EVs still carry a price premium over petrol vehicles.

Buying a car is one of the biggest financial commitments a typical household makes. However, the Electric Car Discount makes EVs affordable and within reach for workers today with no upfront cost and payments deducted directly from pre-tax salary, creating immediate cost-of-living relief and long-term savings. Australia still trails behind global benchmarks for EV adoption and has a long journey ahead to meet emissions targets.

However, the recent fuel crisis has turned curiosity into commitment for many Australians. The understanding that the EV Discount is available helps them manage the upfront cost of an EV. “Our members have witnessed heightened demand for used EVs and from workers living in outer and regional areas,” Martin added. “These workers often face longer commutes and are among those hardest hit by rising fuel costs, making the case for an EV, and the savings that come with it, all the more compelling.” The next significant data release on automotive sales is expected at the end of April.
