TSANZSRS 2026 Highlights Lung Health Innovations

PERTH — Leading respiratory experts from Australia, New Zealand, and around the world have convened in Perth for the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and Australian and New Zealand Society of Respiratory Science Annual Scientific Meeting (TSANZSRS 2026), which commenced this week. The conference seeks to highlight advancements in lung health research and clinical practices.

The event, which started with an opening plenary session, included an address by Western Australia’s Minister for Health and Mental Health, Meredith Hammat, who underscored the importance of respiratory innovation in healthcare. According to the Thoracic Society, the conference also unveiled its Strategic Plan for 2026-2031, which outlines priorities for research and advocacy in respiratory care.

Exploring New Frontiers in Lung Disease Detection

Professor Natasha Smallwood, President of TSANZ, expressed the significance of the conference as a vital gathering for the respiratory community. She noted, “Respiratory conditions remain a major cause of hospitalisation across the region. Meetings like TSANZSRS foster collaboration among clinicians and researchers to advance respiratory medicine.” The plenary featured international experts like Professor James Chalmers and Associate Professor Lida Hariri, who discussed new imaging techniques for early lung disease detection.

The conference’s first day also addressed the complex symptom of breathlessness, often under-recognised in chronic lung and heart disease. Dr. Anna Hudson highlighted the need for better understanding to improve patient quality of life. Pre-conference workshops tackled key issues such as bronchiectasis and lung transplantation, emphasizing workforce development.

The TSANZSRS 2026 continues over the week, focusing on topics like asthma, COPD, and new diagnostic technologies, setting the stage for continued dialogue and innovation in respiratory health.
