Multi-Orbit Technology to Enhance Passenger Experience

SES, a leading space solutions company, has partnered with Japan Airlines (JAL) to revolutionise inflight connectivity. On October 13, 2023, they announced that SES’s multi-orbit electronically steered antenna (ESA) system will be installed on JAL’s long-haul fleet starting in 2028.

Under the new agreement, SES will equip 20 Airbus A350-900 and 21 Boeing 787-9 aircraft with this advanced technology. New aircraft will have the system installed during production, while existing planes will undergo retrofitting. This follows JAL’s prior order of SES’s ESA system for its Boeing 737-8 fleet, with deliveries expected in 2027.

SES’s multi-orbit technology uses both geostationary and Low Earth Orbit satellites, ensuring broad coverage and low latency for passengers. “Japan Airlines’ passengers will benefit from multi-orbit connectivity delivering fast, dependable internet access with wide coverage and low latency,” stated Enrique Villasenor, SES Vice President of Global Airline Partnerships.

Improving Connectivity Across the Fleet

JAL, known for its world-class service, has been collaborating with SES since 2013. According to Junko Sakihara, Deputy Senior Vice President – Customer Experience at Japan Airlines, JAL was among the first airlines to offer free inflight connectivity on domestic routes starting in 2017. This new initiative is part of JAL’s continuous investment in digital services.

“We are proud to have been among the first airlines in the world to offer free service for all passengers flying on our domestic routes,” said Sakihara. “Our decision to provide the SES inflight connectivity to our long-haul passengers is due to the multi-orbit redundancy, reliability and continuous innovation.”

Starting in 2028, linefit deliveries will mark a significant milestone in JAL’s digital transformation strategy. This collaboration highlights both companies’ dedication to innovative inflight services and customer satisfaction. As a result, JAL continues to lead in inflight service innovation, ensuring passengers remain connected on international flights.
