New Technology to Enhance Inflight Internet
SES has launched its multi-orbit satellite connectivity service on Viva’s Airbus aircraft, enhancing inflight internet access for passengers across Mexico. This development was announced on 1st June, with SES aiming to strengthen its presence as a global leader in satellite-powered inflight broadband.
The connectivity service will be available on 60 A320s and 40 A321s, marking Viva as the first Mexico-based airline to utilise SES’s new electronically steered array (ESA) antenna. This antenna, less than seven centimeters tall, ensures reliable connectivity by linking to satellites in various orbits.
Mike DeMarco, SES President of Mobility, stated, “Viva’s passengers will soon benefit from reliable, multi-orbit satellite connectivity that will provide the same fast and dependable internet access they enjoy at home no matter where or when they fly.”
Enhancing Passenger Experience
SES’s multi-orbit satellite network provides consistent and reliable coverage irrespective of the aircraft’s location. This advancement aligns with Viva’s objective to integrate seamlessly into passengers’ digital lives, ensuring connectivity is maintained during flights.
Pablo Gómez Gallardo, Chief Digital Officer at Viva, highlighted the importance of connectivity, saying, “Connectivity today is not a luxury – it’s part of how people live, work, and travel. Our goal is to make flying fit seamlessly into our passengers’ digital lives, instead of forcing them to disconnect.”
SES, headquartered in Luxembourg, is a prominent player in the satellite solutions industry. It is listed on the Paris and Luxembourg stock exchanges under the ticker SESG. The company’s commitment to advancing inflight connectivity solutions is evident through its partnerships, as seen with Viva.
SES’s collaboration with Viva is part of a broader strategy to expand its influence in the Americas. The airline’s young fleet of Airbus A320s and A321s will showcase SES’s innovative ESA technology, providing passengers with a seamless digital experience while flying.
