Fellowship Marks Years of Dedication
The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) will host its annual Fellowship ceremony in Cairns on 17th April 2026, welcoming 27 new specialist GPs to the profession.
This ceremony, organized by the RACGP Queensland Faculty, celebrates the completion of over a decade of education and training for these new Fellows. It marks their official entry into the profession as specialist GPs.
RACGP President Dr Michael Wright expressed his excitement, stating, “It is a privilege to join our Queensland colleagues in Cairns to celebrate this important milestone for our new Fellows.”
Commitment to Regional Communities
Fellowship of the RACGP (FRACGP) is a recognition of a GP’s qualification and expertise, achieved after approximately 11 years of rigorous education, training, and assessment. This event also underscores the RACGP’s dedication to training and retaining GPs in regional areas.
Dr Cath Hester, RACGP Queensland Chair, stated, “It’s wonderful to welcome 27 new Fellows in Cairns and celebrate their achievements alongside their families, friends, and colleagues.”
The ceremony, previously held in Cairns in 2021, is part of an ongoing commitment by the RACGP to conduct Fellowship ceremonies in regional locations annually. This helps to strengthen the rural and regional workforce by recognizing and supporting GPs where they are needed most.
Attendees will include notable figures such as Cairns locals Dr Lisa Fraser and Dr Aileen Traves, alongside RACGP Vice-President Dr Ramya Raman and Acting CEO Pranay Lodhiya.
Fellowship of the RACGP is accredited by the Australian Medical Council and signifies that a GP has been assessed as competent across the core skills of general practice. This allows them to practice safely and unsupervised anywhere in Australia.
Access to high-quality general practice care is essential for all Australians. Regional training and celebration opportunities like this ceremony play a crucial role in ensuring that communities, especially in regional, rural, and remote areas, receive timely, high-quality care from trusted GPs.
The RACGP will continue to advocate for the necessary investment and support to ensure all communities can access the healthcare they need.
