Event to Address Trust in Forestry Sector

The 2026 Forestry Australia Symposium is set to be a pivotal event for the industry, occurring from 7th to 9th October at the Rex Hotel in Canberra. Stan Grant, an award-winning journalist and Monash University Professor, will headline as a keynote speaker.

Registrations are currently open for this three-day event, which will explore the theme ‘The forestry story: Strategies for improved awareness, social licence and effective engagement’. This theme underscores the importance of building trust and improving interactions within the forestry sector.

Joining Stan Grant, Dr Simon Longstaff AO, Executive Director of The Ethics Centre, will also give a keynote address. His focus will be on establishing trust and accountability within the sector, critical issues that resonate with industry stakeholders.

Focus on Community Engagement and Trust-Building

The symposium will delve into strategies for enhancing engagement with communities, Traditional Owners, policymakers, and the media. It aims to foster transparency and accountability, essential components for maintaining social licence in the forestry sector.

Forestry Australia CEO Jacquie Martin highlighted the symposium’s significance, stating, ‘Forestry has an important story to tell, we also have a responsibility to listen, build trust and engage respectfully with the people and communities around us.’ This sentiment reflects the event’s focus on genuine connection and long-term stewardship of Australia’s forests.

The comprehensive programme includes plenary and concurrent sessions, networking functions, and a field trip day. These activities will provide attendees with insights into the sector’s challenges and opportunities, building on the successes of Forestry Australia’s 2025 Conference in Adelaide and the 2024 Symposium in Ballarat.

Participants will engage with thought leaders like Stan Grant and Dr Simon Longstaff AO to challenge current practices and explore new strategies for effective engagement. The symposium is a unique opportunity to reflect on and strengthen the methods of building trust within the forestry sector.
