Talbot Oration Brings Experts Together

Renowned US environmental advocate Terry Garcia will deliver the keynote address at the sixth annual Talbot Oration at the Australian Museum, Sydney, on 4th June 2026. Occurring on the eve of World Environment Day, this event will focus on the global ocean crisis.

Equipped with extensive experience as former Deputy Administrator of NOAA and ex-Chief Science and Exploration Officer of the National Geographic Society, Garcia will discuss the scale of the ocean crisis and potential solutions involving technology, investment, and international cooperation.

Garcia is expected to highlight the urgent need for action in his address. “We are pushing the ocean to its limits while simultaneously dismantling the scientific institutions we need to understand and respond to that threat,” Garcia stated. “There are solutions within reach, and the knowledge, technology, and international will to pursue them.”

This year’s Talbot Oration will also cover Garcia’s insights gained from his role as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere at the US Department of Commerce. In 2010, President Obama appointed him to the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling, where he led the investigation into the disaster’s root causes.

Panel Discussion with Ocean Experts

After Garcia’s keynote, a panel discussion will take place moderated by AM Director and CEO Kim McKay AO. Participants include Jas Chambers, an ocean governance specialist; Tim Jarvis AM, an explorer and environmental advocate; and Melissa Malu, Head of Pasifika Collections and Engagement at the Australian Museum.

Intersections of ocean exploration, traditional ecological knowledge, and conservation policies needed to protect future ocean health will be discussed. These sessions aim to engage the public in meaningful conversations about practical climate solutions.

Part of the Australian Museum’s Climate Solutions Centre initiative, the Talbot Oration is designed to connect the public with actionable climate solutions. The event will take place at the Australian Museum, 1 William Street, Sydney, from 6:30 to 8pm. It is free for members and $20 for non-members, with registration required.

Garcia’s visit to Sydney marks his first time in the city, adding to the significance of the event. His role as President of Exploration Ventures further underscores his commitment to exploring and preserving ocean environments.
