Tesla Model Y Leads Electric Vehicle Surge
Tesla and Polestar set a new record in May 2026 in Australia for combined battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales, delivering 6,681 units. This achievement highlights a significant milestone in the country’s shift towards electric mobility.
Tesla recorded its highest monthly sales with 6,433 BEV units sold, surpassing the previous peak set in March 2024. The Tesla Model Y was the key driver of these results, accounting for 5,605 sales, making it the preferred choice among Australian consumers.
Polestar also contributed to this record month with its growing sales figures. The Polestar 4 saw a year-to-date sales increase of 39.6% compared to the same period last year, indicating rising interest in the brand’s offerings.
Year-on-Year Growth and Regional Performance
In May 2026, combined sales of Tesla and Polestar were 61.4% higher than in May 2025 and marked a 358% increase from April 2026. This surge reflects the growing demand for electric vehicles as fuel prices continue to impact consumer choices.
New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria led the growth on the eastern seaboard, recording year-to-date increases of 63.3%, 65.1%, and 61.9% respectively. These figures underscore the increased adoption of electric vehicles across major Australian states.
Thom Drew, Tesla’s Country Director for Australia and New Zealand, stated, “Tesla has had another strong month in May, driven by the continued loyalty of our existing customers and a growing number of Australians choosing Tesla for the first time.”
Scott Maynard, Polestar Australia’s Managing Director, noted, “It is pleasing to see a sustained level of strong enquiry on electric vehicles through the month, with Polestar closing on a year-to-date growth rate of 14%.”
Julie Delvecchio, CEO of the Electric Vehicle Council, remarked on the importance of this milestone by stating, “May 2026 is an important moment for Australia’s EV transition – the strongest month on record for combined Tesla and Polestar sales.”
