Government Backing Fuels International Expansion
Showcasing its export capabilities, the UK seafood industry participated in the Global Seafood Expo in Barcelona this week. A £1.5 million initiative from the UK government supports this international expansion effort.
More than 35,000 industry professionals from over 150 countries attended the event held in Spain. UK exhibitors took this opportunity to highlight their world-class seafood quality and sustainable practices.
A diverse array of seafood products was presented by UK exhibitors, including Atlantic cod, haddock, mackerel, Welsh lobster, and Cornish sardines. With an expansive coastline exceeding 11,000 kilometers, the UK benefits from nutrient-rich waters that facilitate the production of premium seafood.
During the expo, UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Angela Eagle, stated, “The Global Seafood Expo offers a valuable opportunity for the UK to showcase its top-tier fish and shellfish on the world stage.”
Colin Faulkner, CEO of Seafish, emphasised the industry’s commitment to sustainability through short, transparent, and traceable supply chains that adhere to international safety standards. Many UK seafood companies pursue voluntary certifications to boost their global reputation.
The UK’s participation is part of the ‘GREAT’ campaign, promoting high-quality food and drink products worldwide, including Scottish salmon and English sparkling wine.
British seafood is renowned for quality, origin, and sustainability, effectively meeting the rising global demand. The expo allowed British companies to establish new partnerships and demonstrated why UK seafood is coveted in international markets.
