7,000 New Homes Over the Next Decade
Victoria is making a significant investment by allocating $860 million to the Social Housing Growth Fund. This initiative will lead to the construction of 7,000 new social housing properties over the next ten years. Thousands of residents facing high rents and homelessness will benefit from this project.
The Victorian Government’s commitment was warmly welcomed by the Community Housing Industry Association Victoria (CHIA Vic). Sarah Toohey, CEO of CHIA Vic, expressed optimism about addressing the state’s housing crisis.
“In a tough budget environment, we are thrilled that the Victorian Government has chosen to tackle the single biggest cost-of-living issue for Victorians by investing in new community housing,” Ms Toohey said. “This will mean thousands of Victorians, currently struggling with high rents and homelessness, will be able to find a safe and secure home.”
Addressing the Housing Shortfall
Victoria currently faces a significant shortfall of approximately 146,000 homes. The new funding and construction initiative aims to reduce this deficit substantially. Not-for-profit community housing organisations will play a crucial role in delivering these homes.
Ms Toohey remarked, “It is fantastic to see the Victorian Government investing long term to build up a pipeline of new community housing.” She emphasised the necessity of continued investment to maintain progress in tackling housing challenges.
Secure and affordable housing will become a reality for many Victorians once these homes are built. Financial pressures on those struggling with rent will also be eased. Construction is set to begin after funds are allocated in the upcoming state budget, expected next month.
The Victorian Government’s investment is seen as a critical measure to ensure stable living conditions for thousands of residents. With sustained efforts, the long-term housing strategy will become a cornerstone in improving the quality of life for many.
This initiative comes as part of a broader government effort to address housing shortages and improve living conditions across Victoria. Community housing organisations have proven to be reliable partners in delivering safe, high-quality, affordable homes.
CHIA Vic believes that such measures are only the beginning. More substantial construction efforts and sustained investment are necessary to resolve the housing crisis fully. By partnering with the government, community housing organisations aim to continue delivering high-quality, affordable homes.
