Unions cite fatigue, long hours and patient safety
Victorian doctors will outline planned industrial action across the state’s hospitals at 10am on Tuesday, 29 September 2026.
AMA Victoria and ASMOF VIC are behind the action. The groups link it to what they describe as unsustainable working hours, fatigue and a threat to patient safety.
The announcement is scheduled for the main entrance of Royal Melbourne Hospital on Grattan Street in Parkville. The listed address is 300 Grattan Street, Parkville.
Dr Simon Judkins, president of AMA Victoria, is due to appear. ASMOF VIC secretary Dr Kevin Shi is also listed to speak, along with Dr Emma Boem and other Victorian doctors.
Royal Melbourne Hospital press conference
The two medical groups have described the planned action as major. However, they have not yet said which Victorian hospitals will be affected, what form the action will take, or when any stoppages or other measures would begin.
That leaves key questions for hospital staff and patients ahead of the 10am event. Based on the information released so far, the dispute centres on doctors’ hours, fatigue and the effect those pressures could have on patient care.
The event will take place outside one of Victoria’s largest hospitals rather than at a union office, underscoring that the dispute concerns hospital working conditions. Speakers are expected to set out the details of the industrial action during the Parkville appearance.
Until the groups provide more detail, the confirmed facts are the date, time, place and the reasons they are giving for the move: unsustainable hours, fatigue and patient safety concerns across Victorian hospitals.
